I recently immigrated to the United States and changed my name from Mohammed to Adam
Im known to the Iraqi community in the area by my Iraqi name (Mohammed), and to the American community by (Adam).
I do have a court order for my name change.
The name (Mohammed) is still legal and valid on my Iraqi passport and Iraqi ID.
I do maintenance works and I receive funds from people using peer to peer transaction services ( Paypal. Venmo. Cash App).
I signed up for 2 accounts on Venmo. One using my Iraqi name and the second using my American new name. Both are legal names.
The reason I had to sign up for 2 accounts is that the Iraqi community wouldnt know me if I sign up for one account only (Adam). As they dont know this name.
With Paypal, I can add a nickname thats known to other people. I can add a second email thats known to other people. I can add a second phone number thats known to other people. But with Venmo, we dont have this functionality so we have to sign up for two accounts.
I was trying to transfer $1200 from my (Adam) account to my (Mohammed) account using Venmo on Jan 2nd.
Venmo froze both accounts because they claim I violated their user agreement, and they held my funds for 23 days.
You can only communicate with them through emails. They asked for my ID 5 times. It takes them 4 days to respond. Their response is just an automatic message that asks for my ID over and over again.
I was in a great need for these funds. I was writing to them every day. But they rarely responded.
Finally, after 23 days, they decided to call me. I explained the matter to them and they finally released the funds.
Now, I lost a lot because the funds were unjustifiably held as a hostage. I couldve invested them. Even if signing up for two accounts is a violation of their user agreement, there is nothing in that agreement that justifies holding my funds. All they can legally do is to deactivate these accounts, but not to hold my funds for 23 days.
Secondly, there is nothing in my acts that indicate a malicious intention to violate their user agreement. I was simply using my legal names. They never gave a warning at sign up. Their agreement never says you should not use your international name.
Im looking forward to a compensation from Venmo because of that.
